OKLAHOMA CITY - It's big news for anyone that flies in and out of in Oklahoma City.

Will Rogers World Airport is about to see a $70 million upgrade, including a larger terminal.

On Tuesday, city leaders got a first look at those expansion plans.

On average, 12,000 passengers fly through Will Rogers each day.

Jacqie Williams said, "I've watched it expand throughout the years."

Mark Kranenburg, the airport's director, said, "We are seeing air service growing the last few years."

Airport leaders say because the number of travelers is on the rise, the airport terminal needs to expand.

Kranenburg said, "What we are building is for the future and to meet air service demand."

One part of the plan is to close the west security gate and expand the screening spot to the east into one centralized checkpoint.

Ideally, moving passengers through security more efficiently.

"That's awesome. It would be wonderful. Those of us that fly, we want to get in and get out," said Williams. "The less time you spend with security is better."

The plan would also demolish the 12,000-square-foot cargo building next to the terminal's east side.

Expert say that would allow nine new airline gates to be built.

Best of all, the airport expansion is a sign of Oklahoma City's continued growth.

"We all know the good things going on in Oklahoma City," said Kranenburg. "That demands more air service and we want to be ready for that."

The expansion isn't going to happen overnight.

There are still two years of design and two years of construction.

At best, the work will be completed in 2017.
