GALVESTON, TX. – Crews are working to contain an oil spill after a barge and ship collided in the Galveston bay.

The captain of the barge reported the collision to the coast guard around 12:30 Saturday afternoon.

The Texas emergency manager says the barge was carrying 924,000 gallons of fuel and that it is partially sunk.

Only one of the barge’s four tanks is leaking. That tank has about 168,000 gallons of fuel.

However, it is not known how much fuel has spilled.

The Houston ship channel remained closed today to contain the environmental damage and prevent additional collisions.
