CONTRA COSTA, Calif. (KTLA) – A picture is making the rounds on social media after an officer was seen saving a scared chihuahua from a busy highway.

The chihuahua is recovering at an animal shelter in California after it was rescued from a busy freeway by a highway patrol officer.

The dog was perched on a divider between the I-680’s northbound and southbound lanes.

It is unclear how the pint-sized pup ended up on the freeway.

Authorities say it is possible she was dumped on the highway before being found by the officer.

Animal service officials say the dog is still scared and they are waiting for her to calm down before doing an extensive exam.

However, the office has already received several adoption requests.
