Gasso, Sooners and Cowgirls Honored By Big 12

Oklahoma softball coach Patty Gasso was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year on Tuesday.

It’s Gasso’s seventh Big 12 Coach of the Year award and her third in a row.

Gasso led the Sooners to their third straight Big 12 title and a 45-10 record in the regular season.

OU won the conference race by three games over Baylor.

The Big 12 announced their individual postseason awards and the All-Big 12 teams on Tuesday, and five Sooners were named to the first team.

Outfielder Kady Self, third baseman Shelby Pendley, infielder Georgia Casey, pitcher Kelsey Stevens, and outfielder/infielder Brittany Williams all made first team.

Oklahoma State outfielder Shelby Davis was a first team All-Big 12 pick.

Two state players were named second team:   OU catcher Whitney Ellis and OSU pitcher Simone Freeman.

Pendley, Casey, Stevens, Williams, Davis and OU outfielder Destinee Martinez all made the Big 12 All-Defensive Team.

Oklahoma will host an NCAA regional this weekend in Norman, facing Bryant at 7:30 on Friday night at Marita Hynes Field.

The Sooners are the #7 overall seed and will host a super regional if they win their regional this weekend.
