MINCO, Okla. - A former Minco police officer is caught up in a theft ring.

The heist involves tens of thousands of dollars worth of tractors and other farm machinery.

Former Minco police officer Robby Smith remains behind bars in Canadian County.

His arrest may just be the first of many, in a theft ring that spans over several counties.

On a remote road south of El Reno, sheriff's deputies showed up to look for a stolen truck and found a lot more.

"They located that pickup on the property, but in addition, they found other stolen equipment," said Canadian County undersheriff Chris West.

That sparked a larger investigation that eventually led sheriff's deputies to a farm near Minco where more stolen farm equipment was allegedly recovered.

Smith and his dad first claimed innocence.

"They claimed they didn't know anything about the stolen property," said West.

West says the next day Smith changed his story and confessed.

"Not only did he confess, he told investigators if he was to acquire these it'd be worth it to him financially," said West.

Investigators say Smith's confession may lead to several more arrests before the case concludes.
