MADISON COUNTY, Ga. (WXIA) – A man in Georgia is being called a hero after what he found in the woods.

On Friday, Bryant Collins stopped his truck on the side of a busy highway to save a life.

“I had seen something out of the corner of my eye, and I thought it was a baby, ” Collins told 11Alive News. “I just stopped and, when I got out, there was a baby almost in the highway.”

Authorities say a 15-month-old baby had crawled through the woods, nearly 300 yards from her home.

Collins called 911 and stayed with the child for two hours until crews arrived on the scene.

“The baby started crying so I turned my phone on and let her listen to some gospel music, and she calmed right down,” he said.

Collins says he never would have been in the right place at the right time on Friday had he not changed his life five years ago.

“I did 10 years in the federal institution for manufacturing cocaine,” he said. “When I was in prison, I made a very conscientious effort to change and I did.”

Collins has been clean for five years.

It was in his new job, as an auto repairman, that he found himself on the side of the road, a baby’s life literally in his hands.
