AUSTIN, Texas – A wanted child sex offender on the run from charges in Oklahoma is found in downtown Austin.

On Tuesday, Austin police learned the man they knew as “Dewayne Carlson” was actually 42-year-old Kenneth Roberts, a registered sex offender wanted for crimes against a child.

“This was somebody who had a warrant from Oklahoma for sodomy of a child,” said Assistant Chief Jason Dusterhoft, from the Austin Police Department.

Within hours of learning who he was, Dusterhoft says all downtown officers were alerted to be on the lookout.

“This is somebody we obviously don’t want anywhere in Austin, but we definitely don’t want in the downtown area where we have the Salvation Army and the ARCH. We have children down here,” he said.

Officer Christopher Bell immediately started searching for Roberts.

“We had a couple of tips saying they saw the suspect at 6th and Congress and 6th and San Jacinto,” said Bell.

Bell caught Roberts and arrested him two hours later.

Jan Gunter, with the Salvation Army, says they’re thankful a man known to prey on children is no longer on the street nearby.

“We have almost 250 people here in our shelter here every night and we work very hard to ensure their safety and APD does that alongside us,” said Gunter.
