GEORGIA – Animal control officers in Savannah, Georgia are hoping to find one home for two special friends.

The dogs, nicknamed Joanie and Chachi, were found wandering the streets a few weeks ago.

The white pit bull mix was protecting the chihuahua mix because of his eye injury.

According to Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Facebook, “Chachi, a scraggly long hair Chihuahua mix, was suffering from a horrific eye infection. And Jonie, a white lab-pit bull mix many times larger than Chachi, was walking around with Chachi in her mouth, carrying him from place to place, stopping occasionally to lick his swollen eye. Clearly, Chachi appreciated the attention.”

Unfortunately, the Metro Animal Shelter was unable to save Chachi’s eye.

Christina Sutherin, with Animal Control, says it will be best if the two are adopted together.

“Because of the bond the two of them have that is obvious, they both just light up whenever they are around each other, we would really like to have them placed in a home together to be able to continue that bond. Sometimes separating them they do go through an emotional stage where they do feel separation.”

People from Florida, Rhode Island and California have expressed interest in adopting the animals after their story went viral.
