Women with a recent history of taking certain birth control pills may have an increased risk of breast cancer.

A study over 1,000 breast cancer patients found they were 50% more likely to have used oral contraceptives within the past year.

Birth control pills with high-dose estrogen were linked with the greatest risk of breast cancer, while low-dose estrogen pills carried no increased risk.

Researchers say their findings are preliminary and the health benefits of birth control pills may outweigh the low risk of breast cancer among young women.
