OKLAHOMA CITY - It's a sad but true fact. Out of the 37 percent of folks in the US who can donate blood, less than 10 percent do so annually.

A few minutes of your time and a little bit of your blood could save three lives.

This weekend three Bob Moore locations in the metro are teaming up with the Oklahoma Blood Institute for a day of giving.

Bob Moore Chopper 4 Reporter/Pilot Jon Welsh says giving blood is one of his favorite ways to give back to the community.

"The unique thing about OBI is they give blood to every hospital in the metro and 150 throughout the state, so there's a good chance your blood is going to get used here and sent to where it needs to be used," said Welsh.

Jake McGehee is a great example of someone who would not be alive without blood donors.

In 2012, a work accident at an oil field tool company left McGehee's arm partially severed.

"We were extracting a tool and it contained a lithium-ion battery, and it exploded," he said. "It caused severe burns to my face, all the way down my right arm, right here on my chest."

McGehee spent seven and a half weeks in a coma and his prognosis was touch and go.

"The infections were so bad that there were several times they thought I wasn't supposed to be here," he said.

He says through divine intervention, luck, and the Oklahoma Blood Institute he was able to recover and pick up the things he loves the most.

Thirty-seven people donated their blood for McGehee's recovery.

"With all of the people that donated blood, just the support overall was tremendous," he said.

Being a donor himself, he understands the impact more than ever.

"To know at one time you've probably helped somewhere down the line and then to receive it back, it's a good thing. It's a nice feeling," said McGehee.

Bob Moore Auto Group and the Oklahoma Blood Institute are hosting blood drives at three Bob Moore dealerships this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

You may participate in the blood drive at:

  • Bob Moore Subaru
  • Bob Moore Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of OKC
  • Bob Moore Ford

They will be giving away a 2014 Ford Fiesta titanium to one lucky donor.  Each donor will also receive a voucher good for two tickers to the Oklahoma City Zoo and a T-shirt.
