KALAMAZOO, Mich. – An officer in Michigan is being hailed a hero after saving the life of a driver who was choking.

According to WXMI, Public Safety Officer Jason Gates pulled a woman over for a red light violation Saturday August 9.  Officer Gates says at first he thought the woman was trying to get out of a ticket, but quickly realized the woman was in serious respiratory distress.

Dash cam video from that incident shows the officer asking the woman if she is okay.  When he realizes she is in trouble, he administers a couple of back blows.  When that does not work, Gates pulls the woman from the car and gives her the Heimlich maneuver.

When the food was dislodged the woman immediately began to cry and hug Officer Gates.

The officer says he has never used the Heimlich before, but is glad the woman is OK.

The officer did not give the woman a ticket.
