FLORIDA – Police say a homeless man stabbed and killed a bicyclist at a McDonald’s Monday.

Kevin Adorno was on a cross-country bike trip when Rene Hererra Cruz jumped him and stabbed him repeatedly with a 12-inch blade.

Witnesses saw Cruz flee the McDonald’s parking lot.

Police say he dropped the knife in a bush and hid in a nearby Burger King.

Authorities say Cruz has admitted to killing Adorno.

They say he believed Adorno was on the phone plotting to kill him.

“He happened to stop here in Vero Beach,” Chief David Currey with Vero Beach Police said.

“Was inside, grabbed a bite to eat, recharging his cellphone,” Chief Currey said. “Got on the phone with his girlfriend, who we understand he was going to propose to.”

“Was talking to her, and Mr. Cruz approached him in the parking lot and killed him,” Witnesses told Chief Currey.

Kevin Adorno began his journey in Maryland.

He was 28-years-old.
