TURPIN, Okla. – A mother and her boyfriend are in jail for the death of her 4-year-old son, according to officials.

Authorities say Noel Vargas-Diaz died from child abuse.

The boy lived in Turpin, Oklahoma – right outside of Liberal.

Details from authorities show this may be a case of long-term and severe abuse.

The boy was brought to the emergency room at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

According to the doctor, the mother said her boyfriend told her the boy had fallen in the bathtub and hit his neck.

But the doctor told authorities it was his option the boy had died from physical abuse.

Factfinder 12 obtained the arrest affidavit in the case. It shows why authorities arrested the mother and her boyfriend.

Yazmani Rodriguez faces first degree murder and child abuse.

Silvia Vargas is charged with enabling child abuse.

Authorities say the 4-year-old boy had a large red ligature mark on his neck and many bruises on the rest of his body.

He also had what looked like cigarette burns on his legs and hands.

The district attorney who is handling the case says the mother was at work in Liberal when her boyfriend showed up and said she needed to get home because Noel had an accident.

According to the affidavit, authorities interviewed other children in the home.

One said Rodriguez would beat the 4-year-old when he would mess up potty-training, not eat his entire meal or not put his clothes on right.

Another child told authorities Rodriguez pointed a gun at the kids and the mother, threatening to kill them if they ever left him.

Rodriguez is being held on a five million dollar bond.

Vargas’ bond is a half a million dollars.
