The University of Oklahoma officially announced quarterback Baker Mayfield will not be eligible to play this season for the Sooners after transferring from Texas Tech.

Mayfield was appealing to be able to play this season rather than sit out a year as most transfers do.

Mayfield had been a walk-on at Tech, and left the school to walk on at Oklahoma.

Texas Tech would not certify the waiver to make Mayfield eligible to play this season, and Mayfield appealed his case to the NCAA.

Mayfield will also lose a year of eligibility and will be able to play for the Sooners as a junior in 2015.

Here is OU’s statement released on Tuesday, Sept. 30:

The University of Oklahoma Athletics Department confirmed on Monday that Baker Mayfield’s appeal to the NCAA for immediate eligibility to compete during the 2014 season has been denied.¬†The NCAA has granted permission to the university to exceed the financial aid limit by one so that Mayfield may be placed on a full athletics grant-in-aid.
