TIJERAS, N.M. (KOB) – Mary Kay Friedline has been through a lot in her life but says she enjoys her drive home every day because of a special new addition to the street.

“I noticed it’s a rumble strip, and so I drove over it and it played a tune. And I couldn’t stop laughing,” Friedline said.

The tune is “American the Beautiful.”

The New Mexico Transportation Department says the song is embedded in a rumble strip.

However, if you go too fast or too slow, you can’t hear it.

The transportation department says it’s a new plan to try and keep drivers from speeding along that stretch of Route 66.

Instead of adding police to the road, authorities took a different approach to encourage good behavior.
