OU Naval ROTC runners gearing up for Red River Rivalry, charity kickoff event
NORMAN, Okla. – While a lot of Sooner fans are gearing up for the big battle south of the Red River this weekend, a group of ROTC students is already making the trip to Texas.
Each year, a group of Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Battalion students at the University of Oklahoma run the game ball from campus to the Cotton Bowl for the Red River Shootout.
On Oct. 8, coach Bob Stoops will hand the game ball to Battalion Commander Ashley Carpenter to continue the tradition.
The group will then run the ball in relay 191 miles to the Cotton Bowl.
After arriving in Texas on Oct. 10, the OU Naval ROTC unit will compete against the University of Texas at Austin Naval ROTC unit in a flag football scrimmage.
As you are heading to the game, fans are encouraged to cheer on the runners as they continue to make their way across state lines on foot.
While it is a tradition for the OU/TX game, it is also the kickoff event for the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign in Oklahoma.
