ATLANTA, Ga. (WXIA) – You’ve probably heard the saying that all dogs go to heaven, but one family in Georgia says they are certain their German Shepherd is in a better place.

Last week, the family was driving to a shopping center when they were followed by an angry driver.

“About five minutes later, they pulled back through,” one of the victims told WXIA. “They just rolled right up; they pulled a gun out and started [shooting.]”

There were at least three children in the SUV at the time of the shooting, along with their mother and the family dog.

Bullets flew through the windows and left shattered glass inside the SUV.

“The dog, I guess, jumped in front of the bullet to save one of the children and the wife,” said a witness at the scene.

After the shooting, the dog ran past a few shops but was mortally wounded.

He ran behind a building and later died.

“The dog took the bullet for the kids so the kids would be safe,” said another witness.

“They were fired upon and their family was terrorized,” said Sgt. Gregory Lyon, with the Atlanta Police Department. “They survived that only to find that their pet is now gone. It’s sad for the whole family, especially the day after Thanksgiving.”

No word on if the shooter has been arrested.
