STILLWATER, Okla. - Authorities in Stillwater say a 21-year-old man was shot and killed while attending a party early Sunday morning.
Around 12:08 a.m. on Sunday, officers were called to the 500 block of S. West St. after learning about a reported shooting.
Law enforcement officials say they spoke with several witnesses attending a party at the home.
Authorities say 21-year-old Alex Vierling had been shot in the head after a party-goer was handling a pistol that he thought was a toy.
According to an athletic recruiting website, Vierling played catcher for the Stillwater High School baseball team and graduated in 2012.
Officials with the Stillwater Police Department say they are still investigating the shooting.
Hospital personnel confirmed that Vierling died from his injuries on Sunday afternoon.
Many of Vierling's friends took to Twitter to mourn the loss of their friend.
"He was a nice kid, never heard anything bad about him. Every time I saw him, he was smiling," said Madison Malcolm.
Services for Alex Vierling will be held at LifeChurch in Stillwater, 1917 N. Country Club Road, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 24.
Family members request donations be made to the Alex Vierling Scholarship Fund in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, 5106 N. Washington Road, Stillwater, OK 74075.
It is still unclear if charges will be filed in the case.
