PEACHTREE CITY, GA  –The wife of the police chief in Peachtree City, Georgia, is in critical condition with a gunshot wound, the Peachtree City Police Department said Thursday.

The chief has been placed on administrative leave, according to a statement from police spokesman Lt. Mark Brown.

The police chief said he accidentally shot his wife, Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Sherry Lang told reporters Thursday. “The initial reports that we got from a 911 call were that the chief had shot his wife, accidentally, twice. As a result of our preliminary interview, we have found that he only shot her one time,” she said.

The statement did not identify the chief, but the city website said his name is William McCollom.

McCollom was named the police chief in October and had been interim police chief since July, reported CNN affiliate WSB.
