CLEVELAND, Ohio – An 11-year-old girl in Ohio is accused of beating a 2-month-old girl to death.

The alleged suspect’s mother was babysitting the infant, 2-month-old Zuri Whitehead.

She told police she wanted to give the baby’s mother a break from caring for a newborn.

After she fell asleep on the couch, authorities say the girl took Zuri upstairs.

She returned 45 minutes later, woke her mother up and said something was wrong with the baby.

“The child was beaten to death,” said Chief Randy Ice, with the Wickliffe Police Department.

Zuri was taken to a hospital, where she died during surgery.

The Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office said the baby had massive injuries to her brain, liver, spleen and kidney.

“We’re trying to figure out what would motivate someone to do something like that,” Ice said. “And so far, we haven’t come up with an answer.”

Authorities say they have had contact with the alleged suspect before because of incidents at school.

Because of the girl’s age, the case will stay in juvenile court.
