(CNN) — President Barack Obama said one of the most difficult things about his job is talking to parents about not paying ransoms, according to an interview on Monday with BuzzFeed.

“So it’s as tough as anything that I do — having conversations with parents who understandably want, by any means necessary, for their children to be safe. We will do everything we can short of providing an incentive for future Americans to be caught,” he said.

The comments are the first he’s made publicly in the wake of the death of Kayla Mueller, a U.S. aide worker presumed killed by ISIS.
