SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - Investigators in Virginia are trying to determine what caused the deaths of an 84-year-old woman and her 60-year-old son.

According to WTVR, Viola Cox's body was discovered near the back steps of her home.

Douglas Cox's body was found on a trail that connected the home to a neighbor's house.

Investigators believe Viola Cox suffered some sort of medical emergency and fell down the back steps.

At that point, authorities believe Douglas Cox was trying to find help when he suffered an emergency of his own.

Investigators say both bodies were out in the cold "for some time."

"This is a tragic set of circumstances that led to a very terrible ending for both people," said Capt. Jeff Pearce, with the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office. "There was no forced entry into the house and no signs of trauma or violence to the victims."

The medical examiner's office will determine the victims' causes of death.
