BELEN, N.M. (KRQE) – A little dog is being hailed as a hero for saving his much bigger friend.

Tim Chavez says his St. Bernard, Jazzy, and his dachshund, Razor, are best friends.

On Sunday afternoon, Jazzy decided to go for an adventure.

The 180 pound dog got loose and didn’t come home.

Chavez says Razor was trying to tell him something was wrong, but he didn’t know what.

“I went to feed him and he was kind of going crazy, trying to get my attention,” Chavez told KRQE.

His strange behavior was due to his friend being trapped.

Authorities say Jazzy was trapped in a ditch, unable to move from the two feet of mud.

A passerby followed Razor and noticed the 9-year-old dog in the ditch.

After a call to 911, several police officers and firefighters pulled the dog to safety.

Chavez believes Jazzy was trapped in the mud for 18 hours.
