TULSA, Okla. – It’s a common problem that Oklahoma drivers face on a daily basis.

However, a Tulsa man says a large pothole severely damaged his car.

Angel Cancel said his wife drove over a massive hole along the road, damaging their car’s strut.

“She hit it so hard that the strut went straight up and almost came up through the hood of the car,” Cancel told KJRH.

Cancel has full coverage on his car with USAA, so he called the company to see what he needed to do to get the car repaired.

In November, he says a representative with the insurance company told him to get a few estimates.

A week later, an adjuster arrived to assess the damages.

After months of back and forth with USAA, Cancel received a letter from the company, denying his claim.

“When you pay full policy, full coverage, you just figure, hey, they’re going to take care of me,” he said.

However, officials say that is not the case.

“There is a general belief that when you have full coverage, everything is covered. But there are exclusions with every auto policy,” said Michael  Rhoads, with the Oklahoma Insurance Department.

The most common exclusion is mechanical or electrical failure, which is the reason USAA denied Cancel’s claim.

Cancel says the damages were caused by the pothole, not a problem with the car.

After reviewing the case, Rhoads agrees and they are now investigating the case.

A spokeswoman for USAA told KJRH that they will take another look at Cancel’s case.

In the meantime, the Oklahoma Insurance Department says you should read over your policy and know all of the exclusions.
