(CNN) – A man known for a 1969 song was in critical condition following a crash that killed a motorcyclist in California, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities say 72-year-old Norman Greenbaum was in the front passenger seat in a vehicle when the driver made a left turn onto a road near Santa Rosa, California.

The right side of the car was hit by a motorcyclist who was “evidently unable to slow or stop in time to avoid a collision with the Subaru,” the CHP report stated.

The driver of the motorycle, Ihab Halaweh, was killed in the crash. His passenger was being treated for critical injuries.

Greenbaum’s injuries were also considered critical at the time of the report.

Greenbaum is most notably known for his 1969 hit “Spirit in the Sky.”
