EL RENO, Okla. – A father and son were arrested after allegedly stealing items from a local school.
The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office arrested 55-year-old Melvin Hibbs and 27-year-old Kyle Hibbs on charges relating to the stolen school property.
Officials say items like computers, a carpet shampooer and other supplies were reported missing from a storage building on the Mustang High School campus.
Investigators say they quickly focused their attention on Melvin Hibbs, who is the plumber for the school district.
After obtaining a search warrant, authorities discovered several items that belonged to the district in Kyle Hibbs’ apartment.
Once Kyle Hibbs was arrested, Melvin Hibbs surrendered and confessed to the crime.
“Not only did Mr. Hibbs confess to the thefts, but he told my investigators that he didn’t feel too bad about stealing the equipment because his salary wasn’t very good for a plumber,” said Sheriff Randall Edwards, with the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office.
Melvin Hibbs was arrested on four counts of grand larceny and one count of receiving and concealing stolen property.
Kyle Hibbs was arrested for receiving stolen property.
