HOUSTON, Tex. — A dramatic police chase in Houston ended in a multi-car crash and the suspect was shot and killed by police.

Police say the chase started after 41-year-old Frank Shephard sped off after officers approached his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Dozens of officers joined the pursuit along crowded expressways.

At one point, Shephard crossed a grassy median to dodge spike strips designed to stop him.

The father of three, with a history of violent crimes, also allegedly called 911 during the chase, threatening to harm a child that he said was also in the car.

It all ended when Shephard’s car smashed into multiple vehicles at a busy intersection.

Officers ordered the suspect to put his hands up, and when he went back into the vehicle instead, they say they feared he was reaching for a weapon.

They discharged their weapons, and Shephard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three motorists were injured in the collisions, and no child was found in the car.

The chase and shooting are under investigation.
