FAIRDALE, Ill. (NBC News) – A North Carolina man has a close call with a tornado and he has the video to prove it.
Sam Smith was driving on interstate 39 in northern Illinois last Thursday when he saw the funnel cloud approaching.
You can hear the 43-year-old father of three say he’s not sure which way the tornado is moving, and that he didn’t know which way to go to get away.
He, along with other drivers eventually seek shelter under a bridge overpass.
Whether it was the EF-4, with winds up to 200 miles per hour that caused extensive damage in the town of Fairdale, or a spinoff is not clear.
Smith says the tornado’s passing was more violent than the video shows.
He says he has been traveling for the past few weeks and is ready to get back to his family in Raleigh, North Carolina.
