AKRON, Ohio (WKYC) – Four puppies are looking for a new home following a series of 911 phone calls to police.

As drivers were heading down I-76 on Friday, they noticed an unusual sight in the next lane.

A van was traveling down the road with a cage of puppies strapped to the roof.

Police say the four puppies were rescued halfway through a Mennonite family’s 300-mile trip to Pennsylvania.

“They’ve been traveling a long way already and had a long way to go and they had no idea what they were doing was wrong,” said Sgt.  Kris Beitzel, with the Akron Police Department. “I did ask him why the dogs were not in the car and he said he had far more important things to put in the car, meaning his children, and there wasn’t room.”

The family signed the dogs over to police, saying they didn’t want to keep the animals but were transporting them to Pennsylvania so they didn’t have to put them down.
