Two Oklahoma officers recovering after being shot by alleged suspect

RUFE, Okla. – One man is dead and two law enforcement officers are recovering after a shooting in the town of Rufe.

Officials with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation say officers were trying to arrest a man on Thursday morning after he allegedly was shooting at neighbors.

As officers were approaching Joseph Potts’ house, they say Potts opened fire.

A Choctaw County deputy and a Hugo police lieutenant were both shot during the incident.

According to KXII, Lt. Steve Babcok, with the Hugo Police Department is in critical but stable condition.

Deputy Jeff Epley, with the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Ofice, was also hit but his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

A short time later, Potts allegedly set his home on fire, walked outside and attempted to grab an officer’s gun.

At that point, officers opened fire, killing Potts.
