Volcano in Chile erupts for the first time in 40 years

(CNN) – For the first time in 40 years, the Calbuco volcano in Chile erupted on Wednesday.

Authorities issued a red alert for the towns of Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas in southern Chile after the Calbuco volcano erupted.

Officials say both are popular towns are tourist destinations.

However, the Ministry of Interior and Public Safety said military forces were evacuating 1,500 residents.

The Calbuco volcano erupted twice in 24 hours, according to the country’s National Geology and Mining Service.

The volcano’s last major eruption was in 1962, but there was a minor eruption in 1972.
