TULSA, Okla. — Since the story was first brought to the public in February, people in all 50 states and in 44 countries around the world have reportedly seen the story. Investors have been more than eager to finally get the Tornado Tower built in downtown Tulsa.
The building is a storm that continues to brew for the Tulsa skyline.
“It’s gotten a lot more attention outside of the country than it has inside the country,” architect Andrew Kinslow said.
At the Tulsa architecture firm Kinslow Keith and Todd, the phone has been ringing off the hook with investors not only in the U.S., but from Asia and Europe who are saying ‘let’s get the Tornado Tower built.’
“It’s known as the Tulsa Tornado Tower around the world, so I think it will end up being in Tulsa,” Kinslow said.
The original proposed sight for the tower is about a fourth of a block, but some of the investors looking at the plans have asked the architecture firm to go bigger. In order to go bigger, it would end up being something about the size of the BOK Center. The bigger the tower gets, the bigger the footprint needs to be.
Kinslow and his firm are now looking for a half to a full city block somewhere in downtown Tulsa. But finding that could be difficult if the project drags out for years. Lots are going quickly within the IDL as new multi-use buildings being to pop up.
“This building really needs to be in the downtown area to accomplish all the views we need for the revolving restaurant of downtown and the buildings and the mountains and everything,” Kinslow said.
The size of the lot will determine whether or not the tower is 17 or 30 floors high and the size will also determine the cost.
“The size of the footprint will impact the cost of the building and the height.”
Kinslow says there is now a 70-80 percent chance the tower is going to be presented to city leaders as an option within the next couple of years.
