LOS ANGELES, Calif. - A 41-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly abducted a 15-year-old girl while pretending to be a police officer.

According to KTLA, Joseph Kenneth Cornett confronted the teen as she was walking home from school, claiming he was a police officer and was arresting her for jaywalking.

Cornett, who is HIV positive, took the girl to an abandoned classroom and sexually assaulted her, prosecutors allege.

The teen managed to escape and ran to a nearby church for help.

Cornett attempted to flee the scene, but his vehicle became stuck in the sand.

He was eventually taken into custody after fighting with Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and spitting at them.

Cornett is charged with kidnapping to commit rape, assault with intent to commit a felony, kidnapping, lewd act upon a child, false imprisonment by violence, sexual penetration by foreign object, attempted forcible rape, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and attempted unprotected sexual activity by one who knows self to be infected by HIV.
