ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A Walmart employee is recovering after being bitten by a rabid bat in New Mexico.

Now, health officials want to make sure no one else was exposed.

The New Mexico Department of Health says a woman was riding her motorized wheelchair into Walmart on Tuesday.

Authorities say a bat was hanging from the basket as she drove through the aisles of the store.

Walmart officials say workers noticed the bat as she was buying her items at the counter.

“It was another person there who thought they were good at handling bats and picked it up, took it outside and unfortunately, was bit when they did that,” said Dr. Paul Ettestad, state public health veterinarian.

According to KRQE, the bat tested positive for rabies.

Now, the employee is getting a series of vaccinations.

“If she didn’t get the shots and it went on to become rabies, it’s almost 100 percent fatal,” Dr. Ettestad said.
