HOUSTON, Texas – A Texas man says he is still recovering after the glass from his sunroof suddenly exploded.

Broken glass is still littering the inside of Wade Owens’ 2013 Kia Sportage.

“I’m just driving down the highway, then all the glass caves in,” Owens told KTRK.

As he was driving the 610 Loop on July 9, he thought he heard an explosion.

“It was scary, it was scary because I didn’t know what it was,” he said.

Somehow, he was able to maintain composure and pull over to the side of the road.

He called his parents, who then rushed him to the emergency room.

Once there, he says doctors plucked slivers of glass from his eyes.

“I’m not upset with Kia, I just want to say my eyesight is not the same,” he said.

Owens says his vision is blurry and his eyes are now sensitive to light.

“It’s not just a mistake, it’s a life-changing mistake. It’s serious and they need to get it fixed,” Annie Scott, Owens’ mother said.

A Kia spokesperson says they are now investigating, but cannot comment yet.

At this point, there is not a recall for the 2013 Kia Sportage.

However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received two other similar complaints of sunroofs shattering on that make and model.

The agency is also said to be investigating a similar issue with the Kia Sorento.
