TURKEY -- In the world of death-defying leaps, sometimes, death wins.

An American BASE jumper died in a fatal plunge in Turkey.

The event was being broadcast live.

Ian Flanders was taking part in an extreme sports event. His first jump went well, but his last jump ended tragically. When he pulled the parachute cord, the lines apparently got tangled around his legs.

We won't show you the end of his fatal plummet.

Rescue boats quickly retrieved Flanders, but it was too late. His body was taken to a local hospital.

His death marks the 264th BASE jumper to die since record keeping began.
