Update: 3 killed, 7 injured in theater shooting in Louisiana
LAFAYETTE, La. — A shooting at a theater in Louisiana left 3 dead – including the gunman – and 7 injured, according to the Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft.
Police were called to a shooting at the Grand 16 Theater around 7:30 p.m.
Three people were killed and seven others were injured, Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said.
One of the deceased has been identified as the shooter, CNN reports.
The shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Sgt. James Anderson of the Louisiana State Police, said.
The condition of the 7 other people is unknown at this time.
Multiple witnesses reported the shooter was a white, middle-aged man, Craft said. State police have said the shooter was 58 years old.
People who were in the theater say the scene immediately after the shooting was chaotic.
“We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker,” she said.Katie Domingue of Carencro was at the 7 p.m. showing of “Train Wreck” with her fiance, Joshua Doggett.
“A whole bunch of girls started screaming and we heard that someone was shot,” Roxy Martinez told CNN affiliate KATC. “There were a lot of people running.”
Her brother saw a woman who had been shot in the stomach.
“I see a lady full of blood in a dress,” Robert Martinez said. “She was just looking at me in complete fear.”
Todd Moffatt, manager of a Mellow Mushroom pizza restaurant in the area, said 20 to 30 emergency vehicles had arrived on the scene. The area was locked down, he said.
The shooting happened days after the conviction of James Holmes in the July 19, 2012, Aurora, Colorado, theater shooting that left 12 people dead and 70 people wounded.
