SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The body of a missing 8-year-old girl was discovered in a dumpster, according to police.

Madyson Middleton was reported missing after she didn’t return home on Sunday.

Officials say Middleton was riding her Razor scooter around her apartment complex when she disappeared.

On Monday night, a detective searching for Madyson found the body of a young girl in a dumpster located in the apartment complex where the little girl lived.

The child’s body has not been officially identified, but officers told KTLA they are confident they have found Middleton.

“The coroner’s office is typically the agency that makes the identification, but we are fairly confident at this point that it is Madyson Middleton,” said Chief Kevin Vogel, with the Santa Cruz Police Department.

A 15-year-old boy, who also lives at the same apartment complex, was arrested at the scene.

On Twitter, the Santa Cruz division of the California Highway Patrol said, “Our hearts are broken and our deepest sympathy to the family of Madyson Middleton. We are grieving with the entire Santa Cruz community.”
