EL RENO, Okla. -- A Norman school teacher bonded out of the Canadian County jail after police say he drove to El Reno with the intent of having sex with a child.
Joseph Love, 25, is facing several charges, including attempted lewd acts to a child under 16.
It’s just “attempted” because Love was actually communicating and making arrangements with an undercover police officer.
“He thought he was coming to meet a father and son for the intent of having sex with the son,” said Lt. Van Gillock with the El Reno police department.
Instead, when Love pulled up to apartment 1307 at the Country Club Apartments, he met a bunch of cops.
“He brought two action figures out for the kid, brought marijuana and alcohol out so him and the father could have a little socializing first. Just had his whole night planned out,” said Lt. Gillock.
This all started back in March when an undercover El Reno officer saw an ad posted on Craigslist.
The ad read:
“Any dads like to perv over their young sons, let’s talk. I want to talk to any real dads out there who have sons and like to think pervy thoughts about them. Let’s have some hot chat.”
The officer responded saying he was “a father of a 9-year-old boy.”
According to court documents, the officer said, “Love mentioned meeting for the purpose of me allowing him to commit lewd and sexual acts with my child.”
The Norman Public School website lists Love as an eighth grade language arts teacher at Longfellow Middle School.
Parents registering their kids at the school on Tuesday were shocked by the news.
“That’s horrifying. That’s disgusting and really disturbing. That just turns my stomach,” said Larissa Allen, whose 13-year-old stepson attends Longfellow.
El Reno police are now working to see if Love has actually victimized any young children.
“He had some child pornography on his phone. So we’re checking with Norman PD and with the school system. We’re going to try to make sure it’s not something that he did himself,” said Lt. Gillock.
Norman Public Schools sent us this statement.
“Student safety is a priority for Norman Public Schools. We were informed today by the El Reno Police Department of charges filed against a temporary teacher assigned to Longfellow Middle School and we are cooperating with investigators.
We have received the employee’s resignation, prior to the district’s recommendation for termination, and he is no longer employed with the district. The district soon will make appropriate Oklahoma State Board of Education notifications in compliance with recent state legislation.”
A spokesperson told us Love interned and did his student teaching at Norman Public Schools.
She said he had just finished his first year of teaching at Longfellow Middle School.
El Reno police say Love also had contact with kids through his other job, tutoring for the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse in Norman.
