DEL CITY, Okla. -- Del City officials shut down the Fantasy Island night club this afternoon, calling it a public nuisance.

Officials say the planning department completed an investigation and found significant violations at the club.

The clubs owners have been ordered to secure the club against entry by 4 p.m. today.

This all happened a little before 1 p.m. Wednesday. Some employees were just getting to work when city officials with Del City placed the notice on the door.

“The planning department completed an investigation of the Fantasy Island night club and found significant violations that rose to the level of being a public nuisance,” said Tom Leatherbee.

Some say its been coming for a long time.

“There are some zoning concerns, there are concerns with the certificate of occupancy, and there is a criminal atmosphere that’s been involved at the club,” Leatherbee said.

The director of community services for Del City says this is the best way to address the violations.

“There have been numerous acts centered around this club. Police have investigated homicides, there have been narcotics investigations, there have been alcohol violations. It’s become a tremendous detriment to the neighborhood."

Leatherbee says there will be a public hearing set for a later date. That's when the club owners can present their case on why the club should not be permanently closed.

Leatherbee says the city plans to stand firm.

“We have a high quality residential neighbor just across the street and we can’t allow this to continue to hurt their neighborhood,” he said.
