The University of Oklahoma confirmed earlier reports with an official release on Monday, Aug. 24, announcing Baker Mayfield will be Oklahoma's starting quarterback for this season.
OU head coach Bob Stoops also announced Trevor Knight will be the backup and Cody Thomas will be the third string QB.
"It's been a very tight battle among those three guys," said Stoops. "Baker, Trevor and Cody have all made substantial progress and I feel we can win with any of them."
Mayfield is a junior officially this year, after transferring from Texas Tech following his freshman season.
Tech did not allow Mayfield to transfer without losing a year of eligibility and having to sit out one year.
In his freshman season at Tech, Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns in eight games.
Oklahoma's season opener is Sept. 5 at home against Akron.
