NORMAN, Okla. – With football season just around the corner, an announcement has been made about who will lead the Oklahoma Sooners on the field this fall.

Baker Mayfield, Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas were all competing for the starting signal caller role.

However, sources tell NewsChannel 4 Sports that Baker Mayfield won the starting quarterback job, meaning Trevor Knight will be sitting on the sidelines.

Knight has essentially led the team for the past two seasons.

After finishing last season on a sour note with the Sooners’ dismal performance in the Russell Athletic Bowl, coaches said there needed to be changes.

Mayfield, who transferred to OU from Texas Tech, was forced to sit out last season due to NCAA rules.

In 2013, he was named the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

OU made the official announcement on Twitter on Monday afternoon.

The Sooners’ season kicks off Sept. 5 against Akron in Norman.
