CHICKASHA, Okla. - A newly born puppy is saved in Chickasha, after she was left to die in a dumpster.
At only eight weeks old, Obi is already kind of a Chickasha legend.
"She was born and thrown right into a dumpster," said resident Jennifer Palesano.
It happened between Choctaw Avenue and the old police department, when a casual stroll became a brief dumpster dive.
"Somebody was walking by a dumpster here in Chickasha, and they heard cries," Palesano said.
The fact that she was found at all is amazing because, back then, Obi wasn't the little fur-ball she is today.
"Dogs, when they're in the mother's womb, they're in several different sacks," Palesano said. "They saw her still in her birth sac with the umbilical cord and everything attached."
A freshly born was pup left in a dump nowhere near her mom.
Soon, though, that void was filled by a young lady with a big heart.
"I've always loved animals, so I really wanted to help her," said 17-year-old Konar Sanchez.
Obi found a new mom in Sanchez, and it was the mom she desperately needed.
"She had to be fed every two hours, like day and night," Sanchez said. "I warmed up towels and kept a heating pad underneath her box, so she could stay warm all night."
How she ended up in the trash is anyone's guess, but it appears Obi's dumpster dives are far behind her.
"I think people need to realize that animals can't speak for themselves," Sanchez said. "They have no voice, so you have to be the voice for the voiceless."
