MIAMI, Fla. – Lula Mae Hilton was buried eight years ago at Dade Memorial Park cemetery, but her family recently learned that there had been a big mistake when she was laid to rest.
“Day after day, four times, five times a year coming out here, I’m sitting there talking to her making believe she’s talking back to me,” T.Y. Hilton, Sr., Hilton’s son, told WPLG. “I was just talking to someone that didn’t even exist in that spot. That’s the hurting part.”
However, family members learned that Hilton had actually been buried in an unmarked plot in the cemetery.
The cemetery realized its mistake when the plot where Hilton was thought to have been buried was then purchased by someone else’s family.
On Thursday, the cemetery raised Hilton’s casket and reburied her in the correct plot.
“We got some type of closure,” Hilton said. “She’s in the right place and I’m very happy of that, but I’m still sad that we had to go through that once again. Just thank God it’s all over.”
