AUSTRALIA — What started as a joyride in a shopping cart turned deadly Tuesday.

Two students, both 28-year-old Swedish natives, were riding a metal shopping cart in Sydney around 12:20 local time.

Reports say one man was riding inside the cart while the other was standing on the back. They were reportedly going down a hill headed towards the ocean.

Police say the trolley could have been hitting speeds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) going down the steep 60 km/h (37 mph) road when it collided with a vehicle.

One of the men suffered severe injuries and died at the scene, and the other was transported to the hospital where he remains in serious but stable condition, according to Mashable.

The driver, a 45-year-old man, was uninjured.

He is undergoing mandatory blood and drug testing, but allegedly produced a negative blood-alcohol reading immediately after the incident.
