Three-year-old Nalani Cain wandered away from her great uncle’s house in Piedmont Tuesday afternoon.
“We started receiving a lot of calls from citizens that wanted to organize search parties, help out, lend equipment,” said Piedmont police chief Scott Singer.
In the end, a neighbor found the little girl sitting in a rocking chair on a front porch of a house down the street.
“I was like really shaking," said Stacy Reich. "I was like, 'What do I do?'"
Reich had just gone out back to check on her chickens when she heard some crying.
“So, I kept walking up to my grandparents’ house, and it got closer and closer. I looked up on the porch, and there she was in the rocking chair just sitting there crying," Reich said. "I grabbed her, and I called 911."
Little Nalani was scared but otherwise okay, clutching her stuffed dragon.
Chopper 4 caught the emotional reunion, as she was returned to her mom.
Brittany Cain, Nalani’s mom, said her great uncle was babysitting when the girl wandered off.
“He said she wanted to go play out on the porch with the cat, and then she wanted to go play with her little dragon at the swing around the corner," Brittany said. "He saw her through all the windows, and then next thing you know he didn’t see her through the other window."
Brittany said this was her great uncle’s first time babysitting the little girl, so she wasn’t real familiar with the neighborhood.
