ROUND ROCK, Texas – A family in Texas says one member of their group won’t be home for Christmas.
The Graves family headed out on a cruise, leaving their 4-year-old miniature poodle, Polar Bear, at Shady Acres Pet Ranch.
While on the cruise, the family learned that Polar Bear was missing.
The owners of Shady Acres Pet Ranch were out of town when the dog went missing. They say workers are posting flyers and calling shelters to find Polar Bear.
“We know that pets are family to our clients. When a pet comes to stay with us, our commitment is to love that dog like it is part of our family, to keep them safe and to provide them with a caring atmosphere while their owners are away. We take that responsibility very seriously and we never thought this day would come. We know that we failed to keep this dog safe and have expressed our sincere apologies to the owners. We understand that this is an incredibly difficult time for them.
Our focus has been on finding PB since he was first able to escape though an office door. We have brought in staff on their days off to drive the area looking for PB, post fliers in surrounding neighborhoods, visit local shelters and veterinary clinics, and post to online forums.
The owners and staff at Shady Acres are animal lovers, we are truly passionate about the care of animals and our family built this facility as a different kind of boarding experience, as a place where dogs can run, play, and socialize with other dogs in their natural environment. We will stay committed to that mission. We have made changes to our policies and procedures, along with adding additional gates between play yards and the office to make sure another animal cannot escape.
What is most important to us, and what we remain focused on right now, is finding PB,” the ranch said in a statement.
“We’ve also been in business for three years and nothing like this has ever happened before,” said Tom Wittkower.
Homeowners nearby told KEYE that this isn’t the first time a dog has escaped the boarder.
