COLUMBIA, Mo. – Federal officials were called after dozens of cell phones were purchased in four different cities in Missouri in less than a week.
Police are investigating the purchase of cell phones at Walmart stores in Columbia, Jefferson City, Lebanon and Macon.
On Thursday, police in Jefferson City said they had a similar report of an attempted purchase within the same time frame.
“Right then and there, I knew there was not something adding up about this. It’s not right, it doesn’t make any sense,” a witness said. “Who’s going to order 50 phones for Christmas? Who does that?”
Hours later at a Walmart in the town of Lebanon, police say two men bought 60 phones. The men were questioned and released since police had no legal reason to detain them.
The FBI was called for two of the cases. A spokesman told WDAF that it is standard procedure for law enforcement to call them if something is suspicious.
