NORMAN, Okla. - Norman police are investigating a deadly shooting.
The 41-year-old victim, a father and husband, had just stepped out on his balcony when the bullets started flying.
Police are trying to piece together exactly what happened at the Summerfield Village Apartments.
It happened Monday night just before 10.
Police responded to an upstairs apartment in the 900 block of east Lindsey.
They found Kenneth Keeling, Jr. lying on the ground and covered in blood from a gunshot wound.
“There were some people that were outside and actually saw what unfolded,” said Norman police spokesperson Sarah Jensen.
But, police are getting conflicting stories of what happened.
“We’ve had multiple reports, but they're kind of all over the place, so that’s where we are right now, trying to sort through and figure what’s the best, accurate description of who the shooter was,” Jensen said.
Keeling’s wife heard the gunshots outside her window and called 911.
She wasn’t home Tuesday but told us by phone that she was inside the apartment with her daughter, and her husband had gone out on the balcony to smoke a cigarette.
She said her husband was the innocent victim of a drive-by shooting.
She and her neighbors are on high alert now, worried that, since the shooter has not been identified, he could come back.
The man who lives next door to Keeling didn’t want to be shown on camera.
“We just heard the shots, and we stayed in the house," the man said. "We didn’t go outside. We were afraid."
Investigators said Keeling was still alive when paramedics got there but later died at the hospital.
Police said the apartment complex gets a lot of traffic at night, and they’re hoping anyone who saw the suspect will come forward.
