HAVELOCK, N.C. – A daycare worker is being charged after authorities say she left young children by themselves.

A mother called police after she stopped by the ‘Prince and Princess Play Date’ daycare and found her 5-year-old son and seven other children inside the facility with no adults in sight.

When authorities arrived, they asked one of the children to unlock the front door, which they could not.

The daycare’s owner, Danika Edwards, retrieved a key and opened the door.

Once inside, officials told WITN that children between the ages of 11-months-old and 7-years-old were left alone.

The mother says Edwards explained that the employee who was supposed to watch the children had to leave because her mother was having a heart attack.

However, police told WITN that Edwards “mislead and fabricated” details about why the children were locked inside the business.

Edwards was charged with six counts of misdemeanor child abuse.
